My 2000 Land Cruiser had been suffering from the manifold leak\/tick since I bought it in Feb 2011. It didn’t matter if the motor was cold or had been running for hours… tick tick tick. Not only annoying but certainly not great for the motor. Lexi4Darin had been getting his tick on the cold\u00a0morning’s\u00a0and would subside after a bit. We were both interested in the additional performance benefits as well and pre and post install dyno testing. \u00a0See Pre Test<\/a> and Post Test<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For installation we really took our time… breaks, lunch etc. We wanted to understand the best\u00a0practices\u00a0for doing this so we could pass it on. We\u00a0intended\u00a0to do a step-by-step write for this but conceptually it’s actually simple. What makes this install difficult isn’t the techniques but rather the limiting space in the engine bay to access the manifold stud nuts. The passenger side manifold is straight forward however the driver side you need to have every kind of 14mm wrench and socket you can find to hit all the angles on the DS stud nuts – It’s crazy.\u00a0If one has AHC getting around the\u00a0hydraulic\u00a0lines lines is treacherous.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> My truck was first and took about 13 hours…figuring things out etc. Darin’s LX470 took about the same but that was because some of the things we learned on my truck were hampered by the AHC being in the way on the DS. I could do it now in about 8 hours on an Land Cruiser \u00a0as there would be no experimenting different techniques – I’d go right to it. Because we were both hands on for this project we opted not to\u00a0take\u00a0pictures or offer a step by step as it would be very tedious. If you have modest mechanical skills you can do this project and the actual wrench turning will be obvious. \"\"<\/a> I recommend\u00a0presoaking the manifold nuts as well as other nuts with PB Blaster prior to removal. These nuts have likely been in place for years and may be seized. I choose to replace all 16 manifold nuts with new. Additionally have some spare manifold studs as some will tend to back out of the head when removing the nuts. Gaskets – You should use brand new\u00a0header and\u00a0catalytic converter\u00a0gaskets\u00a0as well – you dont want to have to redo this if your old ones start leaking later.
