The 100 series vehicles have a nice assortment of power plugs through out the vehicle to handle your 12 volt power needs. The problem for some people is that these power plugs are all switched with a key in the ignition, turned to ACC. If you want to leave your cell phone charging while in the house or at work you are out of luck. No worries, a simple jumper can make it all better.
First you need to know of the four 12 volt outlets in the 100, one of them is on separate circuit labeled “CIG”. The remaining three are on a circuit called “PWR Outlet”. The center dash has two outlets, the one on the left is the “CIG” and the one on the right is “PWR Outlet”. The 12 volt socket under the arm rest is part of the “PWR Outlet” circuit as well as the rear cargo area outlet. This modification will activate the “PWR Outlet” circuit only in earlier model 100’s. The “CIG” circuit will remain switched with the ignition.
In later model 100’s both circuits (CIG and PWR Outlet) will activate giving you four always-on outlets instead of three. Unfortunately for the later models the ACC Relay is located in the LH Cowl Side Junction Box (drivers foot area). This makes the mod more difficult by a large factor.
Before you begin any modification to your vehicle you should fully understand what you are doing and make sure you have the skills to complete the job. Supplies:
- Good Crimping tool
- Two male terminal crimps
- 2″ (or less) 12 AWG wire
- 10 minutes
1 – Open the Hood and Disconnect your Battery
2 – Locate the Engine Room Junction Box. It’s near the battery on the left fender
3 – Remove the cover of the JB and locate the ACC relay (yellow highlight)
4 – Remove the relay and keep for future needs
5 – Make a jumper from a 2″ piece of stranded 12 AWG wire
6 – On each end crimp a 1/4″ male terminal
7 – Insert each end of the jumper into the larger female relay terminals, pins 1 and 2 (see above diagrams and consult the EWD)
8 – Replace the Junction Box cover
9 – Reconnect your battery
10 – Get in your 100 and test each outlet to confirm you have power
2003+ Land Cruisers / LX are different in ACC relay location
2003+ Land Cruisers have an ACC Relay located in the drivers side LH Cowl Junction Box, located inside the cabin, in the drivers left footwell. Because of this hard to reach location it’s not an easy modification. It can be done, but I dont recommend it.
If you decide to go for it, pins 3 and 5 need to be jumped on the ACC relay. Consult the EWD for your model year to confirm. Consult the FSM for access procedures to the relay.
