Applicable Models: 1998 – 2002 / 100 Series Land Cruiser or Lx 470

Changing your head unit to an aftermarket unit is pretty straight forward. Both the Land Cruiser (1998-2002) and LX470 (1998-2002) will accept a standard double DIN head unit. If your 100 series has a factory navigation system then this information is not for you. This only applies if you have a standard, non-navigation head unit from the factory.

Before you begin any modification to your vehicle you should fully understand what you are doing and make sure you have the skills to complete the job. TLCFAQ nor it’s authors, commenters or contributors accept any responsibility, or liability for any mishap or problems from any materials posted on the website. Any and all of this can cause serious damage to you or your vehicle. Always consult a qualified professional. I’m Serious. Do this at your own risk.

Land Cruiser notes:

  • Toyota has a feedback loop for power to the head unit via the factory amplifier. The radio connections in the upper dash have several feeds coming from the factory amplifier. So if you use the factory connections in the upper dash and you are changing out the amplifier you will need to tie wires together at the amp location for power, accessory and ground. The amplifier has two connectors (S6 is 16 Pin and S7 is 14 pin). If the following connections are not made or bypassed you won’t have power to the new radio.
    • On Connector S7 remove pin 3 (B+ out) and on Connector S6 remove pin 7 (B+ in) and tie them together using appropriate crimp or solder them.
    • On Connector S7 remove pins 2 (accessory in) and 9 (accessory out) and tie them together using appropriate crimp or solder them.
    • On Connector S7 remove pin 10 (ground int) and on Connector S6 remove pin 13 (Ground out) and tie them together using appropriate crimp or solder them.
    • On Connector S7 remove pin 1 to use for your new amplifier “turn on” signal.
  • All of these connections could be had elsewhere in upper dash area if you don’t feel like tying them under the passenger seat, but this is really the easy and fast location.

LX470 notes:

  • The opening in the upper dash bezel is non-standard and will need a trim plate to cover the hole left from removing your factory head unit and moving to a double DIN. See note at the bottom of this article.
  • Later (2001+) Nakamichi Amplifiers require a AVC-CAN/AIC-CAN signal from the Nakamichi head unit to activate.

ECU Signal Wires for Navigation System Installs:

These connections apply to either vehicle. The ECU (located behind the glove compartment) has five main connectors, top to bottom;

  • E5 – 31 pins
  • E6 – 24 pins
  • E7 – 17 pins
  • E8 – 28 pins
  • E9 – 22 pins

The E8 connector has the wires needed for your navigation installation.

For speed signals tap:

  • Pin 15 – Violet (V) – SPD

For reverse signal tap:

  • Pin 2 – Red/Blue (RL) – Rev
A diode is recommended on this connection to prevent current feedback from your head unit to the ECU

Other notes:

Both vehicles have a diversity antenna system, one radio antenna in the passenger fender the other in the passenger rear quarter window glass (no that’s not a defroster). Most aftermarket head units will have a single antenna input that matches the fender antenna connector in the upper dash, the one on the left in the photo below. Connect it and simply push the other antenna connector back into dash. Alternately you could get a Scosche Mda-B Micro/Delco Antenna Adapter Tip and a METRA Ltd 40-UV43 Motorola Antenna Y-adapter to allow connection of both the standard retractable fender antenna and the on glass antenna. You wont be getting the diversity functionality but you will have the glass antenna connected simultaneously. That might improve reception.

The Land Cruiser has a standard opening in the upper dash for a double DIN head unit, and it fits perfectly. The LX470 has a stylized radio facia and the opening is larger than double DIN and curved. You will either have to make something custom to fill the gap or buy something ready made like this:
